Why Tai Chi?

By July 21, 2015April 10th, 2019No Comments

I never thought Tai Chi was for me. I like to run. I’d seen people doing Tai Chi on the television, in commercials, that kind of thing – standing still, peacefully doing poses in beautiful, natural surroundings like parks – but I didn’t really know what it was.

But I’m constantly trying to re-invent myself, often in response to injuries. The latest a left hamstring injury and a right shoulder injury after I fell off my bike to avoid a passing car. I’ve heard that Tai Chi can be great for dealing with injuries, so I decided to give it a try.

On Thursday I ventured to my first class, with Diane Evans at Imagine Fitness and Yoga. It’s the first time in my life I’ve almost been happy that I got injured. Tai Chi opened up a whole new world to me, and even after I’m back to full strength, I’m going to keep going.

I learned that Tai Chi is series of continuous, low impact, slow motion exercises that activate and gently stretch the muscles. It originated in China and promotes good health, regardless of your physical condition. The movements aren’t forced, and the muscles are relaxed. The slow, deliberate flow is what makes it different from yoga.

It was like floating on air. Almost like a soft, levitating dance.

Diane did an awesome job leading the class. She was extremely patient and answered all of our questions. I can’t wait to go back to learn and experience even more.

Give it a try. I’d love to hear what you think!

Diane teaches a tai chi class on Tuesday and Thursday. You can sign up for a class here.
